Tips for Dressing for Your Photo Session
Choosing outfits on the daily can be a hassle. Deciding what to wear for your photo session, especially if you are coordinating outfits for a family, can be downright daunting! No one understands this challenge better than me. When I have photos taken of my family, I have to plan and execute outfits for six people! Throw in two little boys who aren’t interested in dressing up and two daughters who have very specific tastes and opinions about their wardrobe and my head is often left spinning. My poor cousin is often the recipient of endless texts about what combination of pieces looks best together. Her level of patience is extraordinary and I couldn’t do it without her, but I want this part of the photo process to be easier for my clients.
Choosing the best wardrobe pieces for a photoshoot is the foundation of creating a beautiful photograph and the good news is that I am here to help! When you book a session with me you will receive a complimentary client experience guide that goes into great detail about tips for styling everyone including yourself! I also highly recommend pairing my recommendations with a Pinterest search as there are a ton of wonderful boards available for some inspiration.
Some of the biggest things to consider when planning what to wear are the following:
Location / Season
Where and when you will be taking your photos will help narrow down some outfit ideas. You will want to not only choose outfits that compliment the scenery around you, but you will also want to make sure you have dressed appropriately for the season. If the session will be taking place in the cooler months, dress in layers. They look sharp in photos!
You Don't Have to Match...and Shouldn’t!
Although it may be tempting to dress everyone in the same plaid print or white tees and jeans, photos always look more stunning when there is nice coordination without overly matching. I typically suggest dressing no more than two people up in the same print or color. This helps to balance out your photos so that the attention is on you, not your matching outfits.
Dress up!
You’ve invested in having your photos taken, you want to make sure you and your family look your absolute best. Though going the casual route is always more comfortable, dressing up is a simple way to boost your confidence and have you feeling your best which will absolutely show in your photos.
Stay True Your Personality and Personal Style
Be true to yourselves when it comes to choosing outfits for your session! Your images should be a true reflection of you and your family. You will be looking back on these images for years to come, choose wardrobe and accessory pieces that highlight who you are.
Be Comfortable
It is so important to be comfortable in the clothes you choose. It is very evident if your little ones do not like the bow you've selected or if dad feels squished in his suit. Choose outfits that will allow you to focus on the fun you are having instead of what you are wearing.
