Through the Lens: Insights from My First Year in a Special Education Classroom
As many of you know, I decided to return to the classroom last fall after several years of focusing solely on my photography business. I took a position teaching in a special education classroom for children with social and emotional needs. This was a huge step out of my comfort zone, but it felt right to give it a try with my fresh start. Not only did I absolutely love my experience in the classroom this year, teaching in a kindergarten and first-grade special education classroom significantly enhanced my skills behind the lens. I’ve always considered myself pretty adept at working with children. I have two of my own and have taught hundreds of students over a decade plus in education. However, over the past year, I've come to realize that the lessons learned in this particular classroom have profoundly influenced my approach to photography, particularly when working with families and children.
First Quarter Check-In with EK
Hi, friends! It’s the day before Valentine’s Day and a snow day which means it’s the perfect time to write this blog. Back in December I wrote a year in review as I usually do. I struggled through writing that blog post. I started plenty early. I remember staring at a blank page while I vacationed in Florida for Thanksgiving and the inspiration wasn’t there. I finally put something together and, when I look back on it now, I can read the reality I was hiding through the words. 2023 was a challenging year in my personal life and it was tough to find the silver lining to write an end of year recap
Engagement Sessions are a Must…Here’s Why
While it’s easy to cross an engagement session off of your to-do list in an attempt to make it just a bit shorter, I’m here to tell you that’s a mistake. The great news is I offer an engagement session with every one of my wedding packages (that’s how important I think they are!) so it’s a no-brainer to schedule one. However, if you’re on the fence, these are my Top 3 reasons for scheduling an engagement session with your wedding photographer.
Interview with a Photo Client
Today I am excited to share an interview I had with one of my recent clients. Meet Megan! She’s a mom of two girls, former teacher and current PhD student, and an all around incredible person. Have you ever met someone who just radiates light and has a super positive energy? That’s Megan!
I can’t wait to share the details of our conversation together. As much as I love telling you about what I pride myself on offering to my clients, it’s different when you hear it from someone who has had an experience with EK Photography. Without further ado, here’s my interview with Megan.
A Creative Session that Spoke to my Soul
Back in March I attended the Reset conference for photographers and one of the keynote speakers encouraged us to make time for personally fulfilling projects. Reflecting on her words, I realized I haven’t made time or space to take pictures that are just for me in quite some time. Though every session I do for my clients is work I am proud to create and deliver, I wanted to make space to do my art for no other reason than my own love of the process.
5 Facts About Your Photographer
Happy New Year! I hope you’re feeling refreshed and renewed after another busy holiday season. New years are fresh starts so I thought this was the perfect time to reintroduce myself to you. Everyone knows I’m the blonde with the camera (those are the descriptors I use with new clients to tell them how to identify me at their session location), but there’s so much more about me I’m excited to share with you! Here are 5 NEW fun facts about me!
2022 Year in Review
On the surface, it’s been another typical year. The kids are getting taller, the dogs are cuter by the day, and my business continues to grow with each and every session. But, upon deeper reflection, this year has been different. This year for me, like the moon, was a demonstration of phases. It’s been a year of feeling stuck, challenging changes, growth, and ultimately contentment. I’m different now at the end of 2022 than I was at the beginning. While I could blog about the accomplishments of EK Photography in 2022, the wins in my business wouldn’t have occurred without the growth in my personal life. So, instead, I’d like to tell you a little about MY growth this year. Maybe my words and experience will speak to you and inspire you in some way as well.
Just Take the Pictures
Hi there! Today I want to be super real with you. I’ve been thinking about this blog for some time and I realized thinking about it wasn’t the same as writing it so it was finally time to put my thoughts into words. Recently I held Customer Appreciation mini sessions and one mama’s words struck me as I read through her questionnaire. She explained that typically she is the “picture taker” of the family and she appreciated the opportunity to be in photos with her children and husband. Reading her words brought me so much joy because it was clear to me that she GETS IT. What is it she “gets?” She chose not to wait for the “perfect” time or a less busy schedule or when she was at her ideal weight or when her children were guaranteed to behave or when she and her husband hadn’t had an argument or whatever other reasons parents so often give for not scheduling and taking photos. She chose NOW and making that choice couldn’t have been a better decision.
What is EK’s Style?
Today I want to tell you more about my photography style. No, I know you’re not interested in what I’m wearing to your session. Rather, my style refers to the approach I take to photographing a session and what you can expect in your final images. You may be considering which area photographer is the best fit for your family and, while there are many points to think about, selecting a photographer whose style matches your own is essential. I want my clients to look at their images and feel I captured the best of their family. Knowing a bit more about what I do to achieve that “best” is key!

A Year in Review!
Another year has flown by in what feels like the blink of an eye. Maybe it’s because this was my first year as an “official” business, or maybe it’s because the kids are a year older and just as, if not busier than last year, or maybe it’s just that time seemingly speeds up with each passing day.
